The depot
The locomotive depot at Jaworzyna Śląska opened in 1908, serving a junction of some importance on the Lower Silesian network. The site covers about two hectares.
The collection
The Silesian Railway Museum was founded on the site in 2005 and holds over 150 rail vehicles, including some 40 steam, diesel and electric locomotives and more than 60 carriages, along with specialised departmental stock. Production represented runs from the late nineteenth century to the 1970s and includes German, Polish, American and British builds.
The interest of the site is as much the depot itself as the collection: the layout, the shed and the servicing arrangements are legible in a way that they are not on operational sites.
Visiting
Opening is seasonal and varies year to year. Much of the collection stands in the open and condition varies accordingly; several vehicles are under long-term restoration and are not accessible.
