SourcesReferences
This inventory is a compilation from published material. No unpublished archival research is claimed, and no figure here originates with the compiler unless it is explicitly marked as a site measurement.
Classes of source
- Infrastructure records. Published line registers and route descriptions used for chainage, gauge, opening dates and current operational status.
- Structural engineering literature. Bridge and tunnel databases and technical descriptions, used for spans, heights, materials and dates of construction. These are the preferred source where they conflict with general histories.
- Regional and local histories. Used for construction context, contractors and war damage. Reliable on narrative, unreliable on numbers.
- Museum and heritage-body publications. Used for collection contents, protection status and current access arrangements.
Where sources disagree
Two recurring conflicts are worth naming. First, opening dates: general histories often give the date a section was completed, technical registers the date it opened to traffic. This inventory uses opening to traffic throughout, which sometimes makes its dates later than those in popular accounts.
Second, lengths and spans: a viaduct's quoted length may or may not include the approach embankment abutments, and figures differing by tens of metres for the same structure usually reflect that rather than any real uncertainty. Where the ambiguity matters it is stated in the record.
Corrections
Corrections with a citation are welcome and are the main reason this is public. Corrections without a citation will be noted but not applied. There is no changelog; if you need to know whether a page has changed, keep a copy.
