2026-04-21Pilchowice bridge, and the problem of getting to it

No trains, no path, and a viewpoint that everyone photographs from somewhere they will not tell you about.

There has been no scheduled passenger train over this bridge since December 2016 and there is no formal access to the structure. What there is instead is a set of informal paths on the reservoir shore, none of them signed, most of them steep, and one of them genuinely dangerous after rain.

The photograph that circulates is taken from the north shore, roughly level with the deck. Getting there involves twenty minutes of scrambling and no small amount of scrub. It is worth it once. The truss at 43 m reads very differently in person than it does in a picture that flattens the valley.

There is a persistent local expectation that the line will reopen for tourist traffic. I have heard versions of this for years and I would not plan a visit around it.
