2026-02-05What counts as a structure
A note on the inclusion rules, written mostly so that I stop re-arguing them with myself.
This inventory lists structures rather than sights. A thing gets a record if it is a discrete piece of railway engineering with its own construction history: a bridge, a viaduct, a tunnel, a depot, a station building. A scenic stretch of line does not, however good it looks.
Lines get their own record type because structures need a parent, and because the opening sequence of a line is often the clearest evidence for when a structure was actually finished. The six-part opening of the Jelenia Góra – Żagań line tells you more about the difficulty of the Wleń tunnels than any account of the tunnels themselves.
Figures are given as published. Where two sources disagree I have taken the one used in the more recent technical literature and said so. Where I have measured something myself I have marked it, and there is very little of that here.
